Demodex blepharitis (DB) is an inflammation of the eyelid margins caused by an excessive presence of the Demodex mite. These tiny mites live in the hair follicles and sebaceous glands of the eyelids. When they multiply in large numbers, they can cause irritation, itching, redness, and inflammation.
Nevertheless, this condition is often overlooked. That is why it is important for ophthalmologists to know how to recognize and correctly treat DB. In a recent video series on Eyetube, international experts share their insights on this topic, directly from their practical experience.
Dr. Mertens also speaks in the series. Among other things, he explains how ophthalmologists can easily detect DB with the slit lamp and what impact this can have on the patient’s daily comfort.
