Dr. Erik Mertens is medisch directeur en oprichter van Medipolis Eye Center in Antwerpen en behoort tot de meest ervaren refractieve en cataractchirurgen van Europa. Sinds zijn afstuderen als arts aan de Universiteit Antwerpen in 1991 bouwde hij een internationale reputatie op binnen de oogheelkunde, met bijzondere expertise in refractieve chirurgie, cataractchirurgie, premium intraoculaire lenzen, phakische lenzen en presbyopiecorrectie.
Tijdens zijn opleiding in de oogheelkunde specialiseerde hij zich in geavanceerde technieken zoals laserchirurgie, wavefront-geleide behandelingen, cataractchirurgie, corneachirurgie en implantatie van phakische intraoculaire lenzen. Doorheen zijn carrière stond innovatie steeds centraal. In 2012 voerde hij als eerste chirurg in België een femtosecond laser cataractoperatie uit. Inmiddels realiseerde hij meer dan 8.500 femtosecond laser cataractingrepen (FLACS).
Naast zijn klinische activiteiten is Dr. Mertens een veelgevraagd internationaal spreker, onderzoeker en opleider. Hij verzorgde meer dan 600 wetenschappelijke presentaties op nationale en internationale congressen en publiceerde talrijke wetenschappelijke artikelen over refractieve chirurgie, cataractchirurgie en innovatieve lensimplantaten. Daarnaast was hij principal investigator in meerdere internationale klinische studies rond nieuwe oogheelkundige technologieën.
Dr. Mertens is Fellow van de European Board of Ophthalmology (FEBO), Fellow van het World College of Refractive Surgery and Visual Sciences (FWCRS) en behaalde in 2025 het prestigieuze FEBOS-CR diploma, de Europese subspecialisatiecertificering voor cataract- en refractieve chirurgie. Hij vervulde bestuursfuncties binnen diverse internationale organisaties en was voorzitter van AECOS Europe van 2019 tot 2022.
Als oprichter van Medipolis Eye Center, Eqiris en Signifeye zet hij zich dagelijks in voor innovatieve, hoogwaardige en patiëntgerichte oogzorg. Zijn expertise omvat het volledige spectrum van moderne visuscorrectie, van laserbehandelingen tot premium lensimplantaten en geavanceerde cataractchirurgie.

Dr. Erik Mertens combineert een uitgebreide klinische praktijk met internationale onderzoeksactiviteiten binnen de refractieve chirurgie en cataractchirurgie. Zijn onderzoek richt zich onder meer op premium intraoculaire lenzen, phakische lenzen, presbyopiecorrectie, femtosecond-technologie, innovatieve chirurgische technieken en nieuwe diagnostische toepassingen. Hij trad op als principal investigator in meerdere internationale klinische studies en publiceerde uitgebreid in gerenommeerde wetenschappelijke tijdschriften.
